Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Solution-focused therapy, sometimes called “brief therapy,” focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on their challenges or mental health issues. The therapist will help the client envision a desirable future and then map out the small and large changes necessary for the client to undergo to realize their vision. The therapist will seize on any successes the client experiences to encourage them to build on their strengths rather than dwell on their problems or limitations.

The team of professionals at Guided Grace, Family and Youth Services offers a wide range of therapeutic services for patients of all ages. We want to help our patients achieve optimal mental health by providing a therapy plan best suited to their needs. Our specialists can determine which method offers you the most benefit and gives you the best chance of success. Speak with a member of our team to take the first step towards better mental health and quality of life!

SFBT Techniques

There is a saying that the only constant thing in life is change! This thought can be applied to Solution-Focused Brief Therapy by encouraging participants to understand that they create their reality. With that, they can change it simply by adjusting their thinking.

SFBT places less emphasis on problems and more of a spotlight on useful solutions. This therapy method includes questions that allow clients to identify and list their strengths, personal resources, and desires.

Examples of these questions may include:

  • Miracle Questions: Imagine your life without the problem; a hypothetical where a miracle happens, and the problem is gone.
  • Exception Questions: Identify times when things have been different, and the problem wasn’t so prominent.
  • Scaling Questions: perceive their problems on a numbered scale, which is a helpful way to monitor progress and recognize change.

What can Solution-Focused Brief Therapy help with?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is beneficial when clients have a specific goal or desired outcome that they are trying to achieve. It is effective as a standalone therapy or can be used successfully in conjunction with other methods (lending it its name, focus on the solution, the result, and less on any potential obstacles!) Patients of all ages and conditions can see positive outcomes, including addiction, child behavioral problems, and relationship problems.

Benefits of SFBT

The primary benefit of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is that it is a form of ‘brief therapy’, meaning most patients can expect between 5-8 sessions for notable progress. This makes SFBT more affordable compared to more comprehensive therapy methods.
This isn’t about healing old wounds; it is designed to guide you towards future goals. Most of the time is spent on solutions and what it takes to get you there!
