Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

We frequently ask customers whether they have taken a moment to reflect on what they are doing or thinking about at the time. Being present in the moment is simply mindfulness. Mindfulness works for children and adults experiencing anxiety, obsessive-compulsiveness, trauma, aggression, depression, and much more. For clients with chronic pain, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and other health issues, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, or MBCT, is a two-part therapy that aims to reduce stress, manage pain, and embrace the freedom to respond to situations by choice.

MCBT blends two disciplines—cognitive therapy and mindfulness. The NIH has provided studies showing MBCT to be effective in helping patients deal with anxiety and mood difficulties associated with depression.

At Guided Grace Family and Youth Services, we approach old problems in new ways, opting to use diverse methods and interventions. What you are experiencing is unique, so the individualized treatment should be tailored just for your needs.

Mindfulness Therapy

Mindfulness helps by reflecting on moments and thoughts without passing judgment. MBCT clients pay close attention to their feelings to achieve an objective mindset, thus viewing and combating life’s unpleasant occurrences.

Depression can be attributed to someone who dwells on the past, and anxiety builds when a person overanalyzes future events. Mindfulness is designed to combat these negative thought cycles by making you aware of them and then consciously attempting to change them. The essence of mindfulness is bringing attention to your thoughts and feelings and focusing on the present moment.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. The therapist assists the client in identifying, testing the reality of, and correcting dysfunctional beliefs underlying their thinking.

The therapist then helps the client modify those thoughts and the behaviors that flow from them. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often involves homework assignments. CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression and anxiety.
