Intervention Therapy

An intervention, referred to as Intervention Therapy, is a planned attempt by the family and friends of the subject to, in effect, get them to seek help for an addiction (i.e., drugs, medications, gambling) or other serious problem. Interventionists (as they are sometimes called) or intervention specialists often work with treatment facilities to provide the patient with after-care that will be necessary.

The team of professionals at Guided Grace, Family and Youth Services offers a wide range of therapeutic services for patients of all ages. We want to help our patients achieve optimal mental health by providing a therapy plan best suited to their needs. Our specialists can determine which method offers you the most benefit and gives you the best chance of success. Goals of an Intervention

An intervention is a planned method of therapy where family and friends have a calm, structured conversation with their loved ones about their substance abuse or problematic behavior and ask them to accept treatment. Ideal results can present themselves in the form of:

Awareness:
Make them aware of the scope of the problem and that their friends and family are concerned about their wellbeing.

Motivation:
Having support from friends and family can be the deciding factor that allows them to accept that there is a problem and encourages them to seek help.

Action plan:
Outline a defined recovery plan while also clarifying that if they do not seek help, you will take your own action. Your ultimatum should be firm but fair.

Keys to a Successful Intervention

If you are looking to plan an intervention for a friend or loved one, speak with one of our expert therapists about important tips to help make your intervention more successful:

Plan ahead. Make sure to thoroughly educate yourselves on addiction so you can approach the situation from a place of compassion and understanding. The more organized and prepared you are, the more powerful the experience will be.

Timing can be everything. Try to find the time when they might be in a better, more positive mood. It’s also important that they be sober at the time.

Expect anger. Your friend or loved one will likely feel incredibly vulnerable and may respond very negatively once they realize what is happening. This is a normal defense mechanism that must be met calmly, do not reciprocate with anger.

Stick to the plan. Don’t get sidetracked or back down from the goal at hand. As they try to deflect and deny, you need to persist!

Get an honest answer. The saying ‘if you give an inch, they’ll take a mile’ applies here. Don’t give the opportunity to ‘think things over’ or ‘get back to us when you’re ready’. This situation needs to come to a firm resolution at that time.
